| The City of Norwalk's wastewater treatment plant is located on Plank Road at Austin Shadle Drive and operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The plant underwent a major upgrade in 2007 - 2008 to improve the quality of water discharged into the West Branch of Rattlesnake Creek. The plant is designed to treat an average flow of 3.5 million gallons of wastewater a day and a peak flow of 8.5 million gallons a day. | |
| Among the latest plant improvements was construction of a 2.8 million gallon equalization basin, used as a holding chamber during heavy rains to prevent raw sewage from entering the creek. Expanded sludge handling facilities and a new operations / administration building were also part of the project. | |
| Wastewater from through-out the city travels through a series of pipes and pumping stations into two 24-inch interceptor sewer that lead to the plant. | |
| The treatment process consists of a mechanical screen to remove large debris. A vortex pump to remove grit. Primary treatment tanks, trickling filters, final settling tanks nitrification tower, where ammonia is removed. | |
| Effluent from the nitrification tower is pumped to rapid sand filters, which removes fine particles. During warm-weather months, chlorine is added to the water to kill pathogens. All chlorine is consumed or removed before the water reaches the creek. Rules from the Ohio and U.S. environmental protection agencies dictate that recycled wastewater entering the creek is very high quality. Thanks to the help from city council, the city administration and the wastewater staff who continually strive to protect our natural resources. | |
