Water Department

Most of the City of Norwalk’s water supply comes from the rainwater runoff
of about 5,000 acres east of the city and is stored in the city’s three
reservoirs on Old State Road. The adjacent Water Plant operates 24 hours a
day, every day of the year, using chemicals and filters to provide residents
with a safe and abundant supply of water suitable for drinking, sanitary,
industrial and other uses. Meanwhile, the department also regulates the
amount of water in the reservoirs. While at the mercy of Mother Nature, we
attempt to keep the 700 million gallon system as full as possible while
preventing overflow and possible flooding. If needed, water may also be
pumped from the East Branch of the Huron River into the reservoirs.

All water
systems in Ohio are governed by the Ohio and U.S. environmental
protection agencies. The American Water Works Association, among other
things, studies and promotes the best methods for producing safe drinking
water.
