Engineering / Public Works

Mission Statement

The mission of the Engineering / Public Works office is to provide the highest level of service to the citizens of Norwalk by adhering to the current American Public Works Association Specifications in the designing of projects; aggressively pursuing state and federal funding; working closely with other city departments resolving drainage, sewer, water and roadway issues.

Program Description

Drainage, Sewer, Waterlines and Roadway Design

The Engineering / Public Works office is responsible for the coordination of design and funding of capital improvement projects, grant writing and project development, specification writing and preparation of contract documents, analyzing bids, recommending a contract award and reviewing field change orders for proposed improvements.  This office coordinates all services for capital improvement projects such as sewer separation, waterline improvement projects and transportation projects.

 

Administration Services

The Engineering / Public Works office is responsible for the administrative support to programs within the department.  Duties and responsibilities include meeting with developers and engineers, budget preparation, monitoring construction project expense accounting, payment of invoices for services received and maintaining files for correspondence.

 

Public Works Plan Review

Engineering / Public Works is responsible for the review and approval of all construction plans.  They are also responsible for the inspection of all construction related to private, residential, commercial and industrial development that is to be dedicated for public use.

Activities include the coordination of reviewing applications, plats and plans for the use of and construction upon public rights-of-way, for compliance with current subdivision regulations and state and federal EPA requirements.

Copies of the Norwalk, Ohio Engineering Standards for Infrastructure Construction may be purchased from the Public Works Department.
